My group and I chose to research and present our group 4 presentation, on Deforestation in the Rainforest. We chose this particular topic, because it is an issue that will soon become a major problem in the years to come because of its huge impact on everyone in the world.
For the project my group consisted of Nicole, Lance, Tiffany, and Alycia. I enjoyed working, and got along particularly well with the people in my group. We all did our parts when it came to the project and for that I thank my group members. The only problem regarding our group that seemed a hinderance, was meeting times. It was hard to work around all of our different schedules and agree on a time and place to meet up.
In the past I have always hated group projects. I hated them so much, because I am sort of a control freak and I enjoy everything to go my way, and I don't like when others disagree or go against my ideas. For this particular project I had to learn to make concessions with the people in my group so we could get the project completed. I learned to accept others ideas, and come to terms with them even though they were not my own. This particular skill (working with others) will come in handy in the future, because there will be more occasions where I will have to work with people, and I am glad that I obtained this skill sooner than later.
Researching deforestation in the rainforest taught me a lot that I did not no before. Researching my particular portion of the project (Benefits for conserving the rainforest's) I learned a lot, but I also gained a wealth of knowledge on other aspects like the affect deforestation has on medicine, and how the greenhouse affect is affected by deforestation by collaborating with my group members and listening to them as we rehearsed our presentation as it came together. My particular portion of the project explored how humans get a lot from deforestation (obvious things like tables and paper to less obvious thing like toothpaste, almost every aspect of the average persons life is affected by deforestation), but I also dwellved into how humans are negatively effected by deforestation including aesthetic reasons, economic reasons, and ethical ones.
My advice to any other IB student attempting the group 4 project, is to take a deep breath, and calm down it is not as bad, as they are expecting it to be. But also to keep up with their group, because even though the presentation itself is relatively painless, it is only so if you know your information, and it is also the responsibility of everyone in your group to make sure that everyone knows their information.
